Les Randos - Le Bois de Phylicas // Walks - Phylicas Wood
Dimanche 30 novembre 2008
Prudence. Perfide, la cyrpe escamote habilement
les contours de l’abyme. A droite, une corde y plonge pourtant résolument. Elle
Sunday, the
30th of November 2008
Sébastien, Yoann, Séverine, Gabriel and I, we left
this afternoon for a walk in the direction of the “Phylicas” wood. We first
follow the driveable way leaving the base by south, then we turn when reaching
the open quarry in the direction of the east. Here stand the most recent
vestiges of the volcanic activity of the island, dating from less than 200
years. A strong wind knock over the clouds, alternating compact stratus , and
stratocumulus spread over, rain and sunshine, in a disconcerting speed. This
weather has for consequence a various light, sometimes dull, sometimes blazing,
and wonderfully flatting the beauty of the place. From the chaotic ground,
widely holed by caves and other subsidence, do erect, blinding, some sinuous
excrescences covered by a rosary of greenness, as the bald feet reveal a naked
and dark of basalt rock, slashed by the wind and chance of volcanic forces. The
following instant, as the sun eclipses behind a new cloudy screen, one hill
erases itself and forms greyness in beads, dispossessed of its beauty by the
small neighbour valley, which illuminates and shivers of glory with us, the
island, and the ocean, for only testifiers.
The wide way prolongs itself, hardly
meandering between the small craters, going along unexpected cracks where camp
bunches of cyrpe and fern. What kind of strength was needed to draw this
landscape? Did Gods and Giants achieve here their fight of blood and believes
for the fatherhood of Mitgard? Anyway, in this place do sound, unexplainable,
untellable, an echo of spirituality and eternity.
Further, we reach a junction. On the left,
a way is oriented to the sea and makes us reach the “BMG” hut, cosily nested in
a hollow where do live together an unexpected population of phylicas, mosses,
cactus and roses. Some few meters further, the cliff overhangs the sea, at 50 or
100 meters high. Prudence. Treacherous, the cyrpe cleverly conjures away the
surroundings of the abyss. On the right, a cord still resolutely plunges in it.
It allows to reach the beach downside, second side of bathing of the island
together with “La Cale”, on base.
We take the same way again, walk through
the junction, and orientate ourselves this time in the direction of the Phylicas
wood. After some more time walking, we join its first approaches. From a
distance, the green and dark mass of the cypress trees surrounding the wood
doesn’t let guess the exact shape of this small forest. It reveals itself now.
This is a small endemic jungle which stands here, wedged in a hostile circle
that humankind stupidity wanted to erect in this place some tens of years ago.
Making one way in it is not easy. Trees are not high, culminating between 2 or
2.50 meters, but extremely dense of small hooked branches, which do not miss an
opportunity to grip on the skin or the face, and on the clothes. The feet lose
themselves in an emaciation of cyrpe, fern and moss which make slow the
progression in the heart of this vegetal kingdom. How impressive almost the
whole island looked like this when it was discovered, before men took with them
grains, cows and diseases. Such as a symbol of this omnipotent seizure of men on
the destinies of the island, a giant mimosa thrones in the middle of the wood.
However, its presence is salutary for us, and allows us to protect from the rain
making an unexpected and inopportune passage at this time. We wait then for some
minutes, peacefully perched on the branches.
Once the rain has gone, we finish crossing the wood to afterwards go round it by south, and join the point at which we entered the wood. It is time to go back to base.
