Les Bateaux - L'Austral, partie 2 // Boats - The Austral, part 2

Following of the article “The Austral”… part 2.

Still, these cliffs enrich of an abundant vegetation which lets place, from place to place, and mostly on the summits, to some pieces of rocks. Some small go down along the vertiginous slopes, and draw a green and tortured landscape, dominated by the “Mount Fernand”, basaltic eminence spontaneously losing itself to the abyss, after a prompt and vertiginous drop of some 700 meters.

In some distance further appear the “Three Misses”, basaltic excrescence shamelessly cutting the azure forming the back canvas of the here standing cliffs. They dominate the ocean, and break the monotony of the aerial ridge joining the Mount Fernand and the Entrecasteaux cliffs. The also indicate the invisible frontier between the northern and southern sides of the island. Indeed, once this cape exceeded, a multitude of birds emerge from the close or far horizon, and forms a mobile cloud which cheers up the bald cliffs.

Then, an innumerable quantity of birds accompanies the race of the boat. Yellow Nose Albatrosses, Giant Petrels or sub Antarctic Sternes, they rock our race with the random inspiration of their flight, sometimes quietly gliding in the skies, sometimes skimming over the ocean at full speed. The Yellow Nose Albatrosses colonies punctuate the cliffs of a multitude of white stains, drawn where the vegetation, greener, seems to mark folds in the land favourable in a hole of the vertiginous cliffs interrupting the ocean.

Before facing the Entrecasteaux hut, we still have to exceed the Cathedral, i.e. a heap of rocks gushing out from the ocean, even still joined to the great cliffs by a narrow ground arm. Above this Cathedral does amuse itself a cloud of Albatrosses. Finally, the Austral faces the Entrecasteaux cliffs.

They are terrifying, vertiginous and inhuman. What could be said facing a rocky almost vertical edifice falling with no interruption from the heights of the island, upper than 700 meters, to the ocean below. Lots of gullies cut the huge wall, as small plates stud the tumble with brief rests. In the west of the cliffs, the Albatross have installed their nests and occupy the overall of the visible variation in level.

Below does an other specie nest, man. This is indeed under these colonies that the Entrecasteaux hut was built, vulnerable facing the will which knew how to erect such wonders in this place. We stay a long time anchoring, communicating with Mathieu, José and Sebastien, who are at the hut. During this time, the marines of the Austral take on board the so much numerous crayfishes which were fished today.
