La Vie sur Base - Retour de l'Austral // Life on Base - The Austral is back

Alors que depuis environ 7 mois, les eaux d'Amsterdam n'étaient fréquentées que épisodiquement, par quelques bateaux de passage, et par le Marion-Dufresne lors de l'OP2, l'Austral est de retour. La pêche à la langouste approche, l'ouverture de la saison étant planifiée pour le 2 décembre.

Mais avant toute chose, le bateau de pêche ramenait à son bord trois nouveaux hivernants venus pour assurer la mission de régulation du troupeau de bovins sur le district. Bienvenue donc à Mathieu, Pierre-Emile, et Louis.
Il ramenait également une dépêche postale, et un stock important de vivres frais, qui constituent, lors de chaque ravitaillement de l'île, un événement en eux-mêmes.

Les premiers signes du retour du navire auront donc été l'apparition du zodiac qui, après avoir débarqué les nouveaux venus, a effectué plusieurs allers et retours entre le bateau, au mouillage à Ribaut, et la Cale. Les paquets étaient ensuite hissés par la grue après avoir été mis dans de grands sacs à bord du zodiac.

Peu de temps après, alors que les marins de l'Austral avaient regagné leur bord, les canots de pêche étaient mis à la mer, et commençait à sillonner les eaux proches du rivage, dans un ballet qui animera régulièrement la vie de la base, au cours des mois à venir. Puis le lendemain, l'Austral est venu quelques temps croiser face à la Cale.
Pour l'instant, la pêche est consacrée exclusivement au poisson, dans un but commercial, ou pour préparer les appâts destinés au casiers à langoustes. Mais d'ici quelques semaines, l'activité se concentrera uniquement sur la pêche de ces crustacés qui comptent parmi les espèces les plus recherchées des gastronomes au monde.





As since around 7 months now, the waters surrounding Amsterdam were only crossed from time to time by some passing boats, and by the Marion-Dufresne during OP2, the Austral is back. The crayfish fishing season is getting closer, the opening being planned for the second of december.

But, before anything else, the fishing boat was taking 3 new winterers on board, who came for the mission for the regulation of the bovine herd on the district. Welcome then to Mathieu, Pierre-Emile, and Louis.
It also took on board a postal dispatch, and a large amount of fresh foods, which constitute a big event itself, at the time of any supplying of the island

The first signals for the ship's coming back were the apparition of the zodiac which, after landing the new incomers, made several travels back and forth between the boat, anchoring in Ribaut, and the Jetty. The packages were then taken up from the zodiac using a crane, after having been put in big bags on board.

Few times later, after the Austral marines had come back on their board, the fishing dinghies were put on sea, and started crossing in waters close to the coast, in a ballet which is going to regularly animate the life of the base during the next coming months. Then the next day, the Austral came crossing for a while in front of the Jetty.
For now, the fishing activities are only dedicated to fishes, in a trading goal, but for the making of lures for the crayfishes as well. In few weeks, the activity will then be only dedicated to the fishing of these shellfish which count among the most appreciated species around for world.
