linstant, aucune vache nest visible.
Monday, the
1st of December 2008
3am in the morning, the base, dazed of sleep, deeply
sleeps. Only 4 persons depart from this rule: Inel, Nicol, Bruno, and me. We get
ready to leave hunting the cow, in the fields dominating the base. Bruno and me
act as accompanier to help Inel, hunter, and Nicol, butcher, during the hunting
session.
Night was completely dark when I woke up at
2.50am and when I joined the Skua at 3am to find my comrades. When we leave at
3.30am taking the way in south of the base, some weak lights, in the east,
laboriously extract itself from darkness, et signals the growing approach of the
sun. Buildings emerge, comatose, from the dark night background in which they
are still mainly dived. After going through the barrier indicating the southern
limit of the base perimeter, we are offered a formidable view. As the sky and
the sea seem to drown in each others, the Austral, fishing boat, glides in the
heart of this intense black hole, and realizes the frontier between air and
water. As the boat is illuminated by the thousand fires of its spotlights, the
halo of light setting it aglow reflects on the flat and oily film of the ocean,
when it loses itself above, in the meanders of night.
We quickly leave the way to walk straight
to the south and climb upon the slopes of the island in the direction of the two
craters of Venus. For now, no cow is visible. Once again the floor draws here
its tortured relief, slashed by small valleys running out from the craters to
the sea, ancestral vestiges of volcanic angers of the Venuses. The light is
still growing to the east, gradually revealing the mainly short-pile vegetation,
this ground being one of the predilection area for bovines strolling and
thieving by night, as thy reach the upper areas when the dawn seems to drawn
upon the Venuses. This is the main reason why hunting sessions are so early in
the morning, since they permit to surprise herds as they join back to their
diurnal penates.
Since no move seems to be identified close
to the Venuses, we orientate ourselves to the west, climbing the slopes along
the flanks of the hillsides, hoping we could intercept a herd during its morning
migration.
It is almost 4.15am when we pass above the
Antonelli hut. The sky which, at departure, was hosting an unflagging
scintillation of stars, now turned to a blue intense azure, illuminated by the
growing sun, however still hidden by the oriental ridges of the island. We stand
over the Pointe Bénédicte and the Point of the Research, both of them being
perched over the ocean, which spreads its multiple nuances of dark blue, such a
timid bravado to the azure standing here. The island has no rest, et unveils all
the range of its vegetal colours, delicately licked by the first solar rays
getting over the oriental barrier.
On top, we are still rocked by a fresh
shadow. But the brightness from the downstream side indicated to a herd the
imminence of the departure to the high parts. Tens of bovines slowly go up in
the hole of small valleys which grass has been rarefied and swollen, during
their peregrinations. The cows didnt notice us. Like since the departure from
the base, Inel walks first, and orientates the ideal approach in the direction
of the herd. Then signals us to stop, a group softly walks in procession, in a
distance included between 50 and 100 meters. Inel goes forward alone, until a
fold in the land dominating the small colony.
About 3 minutes and 3 bullets later, 3 cows
departed their life this morning. Quickly, the hides of the bovines have to be
prepared in less than 30 minutes, unless what the meat wood be spoilt and not
proper to consummation. It is then the turn of Nicol to be into the ring. As
Inel left to wait Lionel and his tractor on his way from the base, he opens the
cows in the belly, helped by Bruno and I, and extracts the paunch containing the
stomach and the intestines. We realize this operation on the 3 cows taken today,
as the skuas, crafty and stubborn carrion-eater, stamp their feet seeing the
fresh carcasses lying in the grass.
We also make the cows empty of the blood
contained in their abdomen, when a fetid smelling of black blood, soiled hair,
guts, and death, takes us to the throat. After this, Nicol checks the ganglions,
which shall not be white in any case, unless meat couldnt be consumed, the cow
being possibly ill.
Lionel arrives some times later with his tractor. We stow strongly the 3 beasts to the hoist in the front, as the sun finally irrupts on the hillside, as if it wanted to greet the banquet to come for the skuas, whom we abandon the whole of the guts and offal. It is time to go back to base and have a breakfast, after a long walk. Cows indeed put us to the test today, since we had to trudge along for more than 1 hour an 30 minutes before finding them. We reach the base around 7am. After having drank a coffee and eaten some toasts, we go to the slaughterhouse to attach the beasts before the removal of their skin to be made, and their flesh to be cut.
